Hyderabad: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has achieved a major milestone after five of its coal mines were awarded the prestigious 5-Star Rating under the Ministry of Coal’s National Coal Mine Rating Programme for the assessment year 2024-25.
According to the Ministry of Coal, RK Newtech and RK-6 mines in the Srirampur Area, JVR OC-II in the Sathupalli Area, Khairiguda Open Cast in the Bellampalli Area, and RG OC-I in the Ramagundam-III Area have been recognised as 5-Star rated mines.
Out of 382 coal mines across India that participated in the rating programme, only 50 mines secured the coveted 5-Star status, with SCCL accounting for five of them. The achievement marks the company’s best-ever performance, surpassing last year’s tally of four 5-Star rated mines.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu congratulated the SCCL management, officers, employees and workers for the achievement. He praised their commitment to mine safety, environmental protection, employee welfare and scientific mining practices while ensuring uninterrupted coal production to meet the state’s energy needs.
He also urged other Singareni mines to adopt similar best practices and expressed confidence that more SCCL mines would achieve the highest rating in the coming years.
The Ministry of Coal conducts the annual 5-Star Rating Programme through the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO) to encourage excellence in coal mining. Mines are evaluated on 50 performance parameters across seven major categories, including scientific mining, safety, environmental management, employee welfare, financial performance, technological efficiency and development of mine-affected villages.
Only mines securing more than 90 per cent marks after a detailed on-site inspection by CCO experts qualify for the prestigious 5-Star Rating.
In addition to the five top-rated mines, 17 more SCCL mines received the 4-Star Rating, having scored between 80 and 90 per cent. While the 4-Star category does not carry an award, it recognises mines that have demonstrated high standards of operational excellence and narrowly missed the 5-Star benchmark.
SCCL officials said the recognition reflects the company’s continued focus on sustainable mining, operational efficiency, worker welfare, environmental conservation and safety standards.
