Karimnagar (Telangana): Tension flared as Congress workers clashed with Bharatiya Janata Party cadre during the Prajahitha Yatra led by BJP national general secretary Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday.
Both sides wielded sticks and rods, exchanging slogans, in the presence of the police. The police tried to prevent Congress workers from disrupting the yatra, but no arrests were made.
Bandi Sanjay Kumar condemned the incident, warning against any hindrance to his yatra and threatening to file a complaint with the Karimnagar police commissioner if his party members were obstructed.
Sanjay criticised Congress workers for tearing down Prajahitha Yatra flex boards and banners, accusing them of following state minister Ponnam Prabhakar’s directives. The police urged Sanjay to alter the yatra route to avoid potential law and order issues. However, Sanjay refused, asserting his commitment to a peaceful yatra as scheduled.
Challenging Prabhakar to a debate on their respective contributions to Karimnagar’s development, Sanjay claimed that he would quit politics if he was defeated in the upcoming elections. He accused the state’s Congress government of resorting to violence to intimidate him during his yatra.
Sanjay cautioned Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy about Prabhakar’s actions, alleging that Prabhakar was instigating people to malign the government. He questioned the use of the chief minister’s pictures at fair price shops when it was the Narendra Modi government providing free rice to the poor. Sanjay raised concerns about the allocation of funds and challenged Prabhakar to focus on public issues.
Denying allegations of insulting Prabhakar’s mother, Sanjay expressed respect for women and flayed the Congress leader for dragging family into politics. The BJP leader questioned Prabhakar’s arrest record for public causes, highlighting his own activism in Parliament for Karimnagar. UNI VV SSP
