Hyderabad: Health officials in Hyderabad and surrounding districts are alarmed by a surge in dengue cases, both in State-run and private healthcare facilities. They emphasize the importance of preventive measures, particularly protecting against bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the dengue virus.
Private healthcare practitioners in Hyderabad report a tenfold increase in dengue cases since August. Although there’s no official confirmation, estimates indicate a rise from an average of 150 to 160 cases per month to nearly 1,200 in August and September.
As of September, Telangana has recorded nearly 3,000 positive cases, with roughly half originating from Hyderabad.
Dr. K Shankar, Superintendent of Fever Hospitals, stressed the significance of avoiding mosquito bites as the primary means of dengue prevention. He advises patients to stay hydrated, consume oral rehydration solutions (ORS), coconut water, etc., and strongly discourages self-medication, urging patients to consult a doctor promptly.
Dr. K K Durga Prasad, a senior pediatrician from Ankura Hospital for Women and Child, underscores the value of rest in recovery. While children may be inclined to remain active during illness, he emphasizes the importance of adequate rest.
If a child contracts dengue, Dr. Shankar advises parents to ensure the child refrains from strenuous activities, allowing their body the necessary time to heal.
