Honouring Our Elders: Islam’s Timeless Message on Senior Citizens’ Day

As we observe Senior Citizens’ Day, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the way elderly individuals are treated in our modern society and the values that Islam promotes when it comes to caring for and respecting our senior citizens.

Modern Challenges Faced by Senior Citizens

In today’s fast-paced world, the treatment of senior citizens varies widely. While some societies hold deep respect for their elders, others struggle to provide adequate care and attention. The rapid advancement of technology, changing family dynamics, and shifting cultural values have led to challenges such as social isolation, neglect, and a lack of recognition for the contributions of our senior citizens.

In a world governed by the intricacies of nature, we find a profound Divine Design that regulates the lives of all living creatures on this planet. The passage of time and the effects of aging are universal constants, impacting every organism. As we commemorate Senior Citizens’ Day, it is essential to reflect on how Islam underscores the significance of treating our elderly with respect and care.

The Holy Quran is replete with verses that emphasize the divine wisdom behind the aging process. In Surah Ya-Sin (36:68), Allah says: “Whomever We grant old age, We reverse his development,” reminding us of the inevitable decline that comes with age. This natural law is a testament to the Creator’s intricate design.

The Quran recounts the supplication of the Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him), where he acknowledges the physical changes that accompany aging, saying: “My Lord, my bones have become feeble, and my head glistens with grey hair” (Surah Maryam, 19:4). This acknowledgment of the physical reality of aging teaches us humility and respect for the elderly.

Islam’s Perspective on Treating Elderly Individuals

In the realm of Islamic sociology, Islam places high regard on senior citizens and those with grey hair. In Surah Al-Isra (17:23), Allah instructs believers to treat their parents with kindness and respect, even in old age. “And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” (Quran, 17:23)

In Islamic teachings, it is the responsibility of family and society to care for senior citizens. The concept of “sila rahmi” (maintaining family ties) is emphasized, which includes looking after the elderly members of the family.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reinforced this message by warning that those who do not show kindness to the young and respect to the elderly are not true believers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “He is not from us who does not have mercy on young children, nor honor the elderly.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith #1919)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized the significance of senior citizens in society. He highlighted the importance of showing reverence to grey-haired Muslims, scholars of the Quran, and just rulers.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “It is part of showing sublimity and exaltedness towards Allah Almighty to respect the gray hair Muslims, scholars of al-Qur’an al-Karim and the just and righteous rulers.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith #24843)
This respect extends to the elderly members of the Prophet’s own Ummah, as he stated that showing respect and facilitation to them is equivalent to honoring him.

The elderly are often referred to as a “Source of Grace” (al-Barakah) by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Their presence in families and communities brings blessings and goodness. The Prophet’s promise that Allah appoints someone to facilitate the lives of those who honor the elderly further underscores the importance of this gesture. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “If a young person shows respect to an elderly person due to their old age, Allah will appoint someone who will show respect to them when they are old.” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith #22022)

In Islamic lands, the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah are evident in the way aging parents and senior citizens are cared for. These societies reflect the values of respect and compassion, offering a stark contrast to cultures where elderly individuals may face neglect or isolation.

Islam’s Timeless Message on Senior Citizens’ Day

As we celebrate Senior Citizens’ Day, we are reminded that Islam’s teachings on respecting the elderly are timeless and universal. By acknowledging the wisdom and experience that come with age, we uphold the values of kindness, gratitude, and compassion that are at the core of Islam. Let us strive to emulate these values in our interactions with senior citizens, honoring them as a source of grace and embodying the principles of Islam in our daily lives.

Embracing Islamic Values in Modern Times

Incorporating Islamic values into our treatment of senior citizens means creating an environment where they feel valued, loved, and supported. This can be achieved through several actions:

1. Regular Visits and Communication: Spending quality time with elderly family members fosters a sense of belonging and companionship.

2. Assistance with Daily Activities: Helping with daily tasks or errands can alleviate some of the challenges that come with aging.

3. Celebrating Their Contributions: Acknowledging the achievements and contributions of senior citizens to society can boost their self-esteem and remind others of their value.

4. Creating Inclusive Spaces: Societies should work towards creating inclusive spaces where senior citizens can actively participate and contribute.

5. Promoting Intergenerational Bonding: Encouraging interactions between different age groups can bridge the generation gap and foster mutual understanding.

6. Financial Support: The Quran also stresses the importance of providing financial support to parents, particularly in their old age. It’s a way of showing gratitude for their sacrifices in raising their children.

On this Senior Citizens’ Day, let us remember the Islamic values that teach us to honor and cherish our elderly population. By treating senior citizens with the respect and care they deserve, we can create a society that is truly compassionate and inclusive.
