Hyderabad: Two more women die after undergoing family planning operation

Hyderabad: Two more women died after undergoing family planning operation in Telangana’s Ibrahimpatnam. The family planning operation camp was organized at a Community Health Center in Ibrahimpatnam. With these two deaths, the total number of women who died after this operation has increased to 4.

Director Public Health Dr. Srinivas Rao told this to the media. A total of 34 women underwent double puncture laparoscopic (DPL) surgery in this camp. The doctors said that the condition of the other women is stable. After this incident, the CHC superintendent was suspended for life and the doctors who performed the surgery were temporarily suspended.

The state government has ordered an inquiry into the matter. The inquiry will be conducted under the leadership of Dr. Srinivas Rao. He said the rest of the women have been shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) as a precaution and their health is being monitored.

Dr Rao clarified that this camp was a regular camp where surgery was done by experienced doctors. These doctors had a lot of experience in this matter. He said that the matter is being investigated to find out the real cause behind the deaths.

On Sunday, 34 women were operated upon, of which 30 were allowed to go home, while four women developed stomach inflammation after which they were transferred to a private hospital for treatment.

One died on Sunday while two women died on Monday and the fourth woman died on Tuesday taking the toll to 4.

After the incident, the state government has directed the Director of Public Health to investigate the matter and submit a report within a week.

The state government has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased women and a double bedroom house for each deceased woman’s family along with education in residential schools for their children.

Dr Rao said that such an incident has happened for the first time after the formation of Telangana. He informed that the post-mortem of their bodies was conducted to find out the cause of death.

He said that the remaining 30 women are being screened from tomorrow and added that the government will take appropriate measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
