New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday cancelled the admission of Safoora Zargar who was enrolled with the Department of Sociology in the integrated MPhil/PhD programme.
Zargar doubts that they want to suppress her work and writing. However, she is of firm belief that will come out sooner or later. Zargar was working on the thesis titled “The socio-spatial segregation among Muslims in Delhi. A case study on Ghaffar Manzil Colony”.
Delhi riots accused Safoora Zargar, took to her Twitter handle to disclose this and wrote, “In anticipation of the approval of the same of the Faculty committee. The usually snail-paced Jamia admin moving at light speed to cancel my admission, foregoing all due process.Let it be known, it breaks my heart but not my spirit.”
Calling it unfair, Zargar said the move is vindictive and vengeful. She blamed them for denying her rightful degree. In a video footage she said, ‘I seemed to be punished for things I have not done.’
Zargar has accused Jamia Millia Islamia of “disrupting her education” by denying her extensions to complete her studies.
An accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, Zargar was arrested on 10th April 2020 and booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 for participating in the protests against the new citizenship law. During pregnancy she spent over 2 months in jail. She was granted bail later.
Defending the move, Jamia Millia Islamia claimed that progress report by the supervisor was unsatisfactory. The scholar did not apply for extension as a woman scholar before the expiry of stipulated maximum period. While the scholar says first she applied for extension citing Covid pandemic which disrupted normal life for two years. But she was asked to apply for extension as a woman scholar which she did. But even then she was not granted extension.
