Hyderabad: The Malakpet police, in collaboration with the Commissioner’s Task Force (south-east) team, apprehended a gang on Sunday that was purportedly gathering public donations under the guise of charity for orphans and the underprivileged, deceiving innocent people.
During the operation, the police confiscated a sum of Rs. 1.22 lakh in cash, two auto rickshaws, and documents related to land purchases using funds acquired from the public. Among those arrested were Kethavath Ravi (35), Kethavath Mangu (30), and Gaddi Ganesh (43), who was the founder and organizer of the Amma Cheyutha Foundation, along with seven other individuals.
DCP (south-east) Ch. Rupesh disclosed that Ravi and Mangu had engaged in discussions with Ganesh about procuring donations for his orphanage from the public. Their strategy involved identifying women seeking employment, promising substantial earnings in exchange for collecting donations from the public at various traffic junctions across the city.
Ravi and Mangu would transport these women to busy junctions in their auto rickshaws. The women would then approach motorists, appealing for donations for the Foundation while highlighting their charitable activities. At the end of the day, the women received 35 percent of the donations collected, while the rest was split between Ravi, Mangu, and Ganesh.
Ganesh provided the women with materials such as visiting cards, orphanage logos, and white coats to lend credibility to their cause. Over time, Ravi and Mangu amassed significant wealth, which they utilized to purchase plots in locations like Nadergul, Badanpet, and Turkayamjal.
The police have undertaken a targeted initiative against beggar mafias, leading to the apprehension of the women at Moosarambagh crossroads.
