Muslim Personal Law Board urges PM Modi to hold serious discussion on Uniform Civil Code
Muslim weddings and divorce are protected under the Muslim Application Act, 1937
Lucknow: The Muslim Personal Law Board of India (MPLBI) has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to hold serious discussions before taking any decision on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
In the letter, MPLB pointed out that the Indian Constitution has given the right to the followers of every religion and community to practice their respective traditions and customs.
MPLBI national general secretary Moeen Ahmad Khan claimed that Muslim weddings and divorce are protected under the Muslim Application Act, 1937, since pre-Independence days, and the same was not even contested by Dr Ambedkar.
As reported by the Times of India, the letter read, “The government first needs to have a transparent discussion with religious bodies of various groups in the country. A decision on UCC without any discussion will be unconstitutional. The work of the government is to solve people’s problems, and not to find ways to create them.”
The Muslim body also sent the letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
