New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on July 29 intensified his attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding his removal from office and seeking a Supreme Court-monitored independent investigation into the alleged police excesses during the July 20 student protest march to Parliament.

Addressing a press conference, Gandhi alleged that the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) used excessive force, including pellet guns and lathis, against protesting students. There has been no official response from Amit Shah in the press note. The matter remains a political controversy.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Union Home Minister Amit Shah from office.

He also demanded a Supreme Court-monitored independent investigation into the alleged police action against students during the July 20 protest march to Parliament.

Alleges Excessive Force by Delhi Police and RAF

Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), both functioning under the Union Home Ministry, used excessive force against protesters.

According to Gandhi, the force used included:

  • Pellet guns
  • Lathis

He alleged that the Home Minister was directly responsible for the alleged crackdown.

‘Either Culpable or Incompetent,’ Says Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi said there were only two possibilities regarding the incident.

“If he ordered it, he is culpable. If he did not know, then he is incompetent. In either case, he has to go.”

The Congress leader said this while referring to the alleged police action during the student demonstrations.

Alleges Students Were Brutalised During Protest

Referring to the demonstrations held at Jantar Mantar on July 20, Rahul Gandhi alleged that students who were peacefully questioning the government were brutally assaulted and shot with pellet guns.

According to Gandhi, the protesters were subjected to excessive police action despite conducting a peaceful demonstration.

Letter Sent to Amit Shah on July 25

Rahul Gandhi said that he had written to Amit Shah on July 25, seeking clarification on whether the use of pellet guns had been officially authorised.

He claimed that he had not received any response to the letter.

Accuses Government of Suppressing Dissent

Rahul Gandhi also accused the government of suppressing dissent.

He alleged that he was prevented from speaking in the Lok Sabha and was asked to apologise for his remarks against Amit Shah.

“I will never apologise to the BJP-RSS,” Gandhi asserted.

He said it was his responsibility to raise issues concerning students.

Claims Opposition Has Evidence

Rahul Gandhi promised justice for those allegedly assaulted during the protest.

He claimed that the Opposition had collected:

  • Photographic evidence
  • Video evidence

which allegedly identified police personnel involved in the crackdown.

He also questioned the role of individuals seen in plain clothes during the police operation.
