5G Smartphones Dominate Indian Market
One of the most notable insights from the CMR study is the surge in 5G smartphone sales. In Q1 2025, 5G devices made up 86% of total smartphone shipments in India. Particularly, smartphones in the ₹8,000 to ₹13,000 range saw 100% growth in the 5G category.
The report attributes this surge to affordable 5G options and growing consumer demand for future-ready devices. Brands like Xiaomi, POCO, Motorola, and Realme are leading this segment by offering budget-friendly 5G phones.
Vivo Becomes Top Smartphone Brand in India
Vivo emerged as the No.1 smartphone brand in India during Q1 2025, with a 20% market growth. Its popular 5G models — Y29, T3 Lite, T3X, T4X — collectively contributed to 43% of all 5G smartphone sales in the country.
Samsung Faces Mixed Results in Q1 2025
Samsung retained the second spot with 18% market growth, but its overall smartphone sales declined by 13%, suggesting reduced demand for its mainstream models.
Xiaomi Faces Sharp Decline in Market Share
Xiaomi experienced a major setback in Q1 2025. Its market share dropped by 13%, primarily due to a significant decrease in 2G and 4G smartphone sales. According to the report:
- 2G phone sales fell by 17%
- 4G phone sales declined by 66%
This downturn indicates Xiaomi’s struggle to transition its user base to 5G offerings effectively.
What’s Next for Smartphone Sales in India?
The future of India’s smartphone market appears to be dominated by 5G technology. As per CMR, older technologies like 2G and 4G are rapidly losing relevance, and this trend is likely to continue. With technological advancements and shifting user preferences, budget 5G smartphones will play a critical role in driving future growth.
