Hyderabad: A tragic incident has sparked concern over food safety in Telangana after a 19-year-old woman reportedly died from food poisoning following a meal at a restaurant in Nirmal. Phool Kali Baiga, a kitchen staff member at Saint Thomas School in Pochera, passed away on November 5 after dining at Grill 9, a multi-cuisine restaurant, on November 2.
Phool, along with five colleagues from the school, visited the restaurant after a shopping trip in Nirmal. They ordered chicken 65, tandoori chicken, and chicken fried rice. Shortly after the meal, all six individuals began experiencing symptoms consistent with food poisoning, including severe stomach pain and vomiting.
The group sought medical attention on November 3 at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Both, where they were diagnosed with food poisoning and treated accordingly. However, Phool’s condition deteriorated over the next two days, leading to her tragic death.

In response to the incident, the school principal, Sister Smitha, filed a complaint against Grill 9, accusing the restaurant of serving stale food that led to the fatal food poisoning. The Boath police registered a zero FIR based on the complaint, which is a preliminary report before further investigation.
Reports indicate that at least 13 other individuals who dined at Grill 9 on the same day also experienced similar symptoms of food poisoning. This has prompted further concerns about the safety standards at the restaurant and the food safety protocols in place across the region.
Local residents have raised questions regarding the effectiveness of food safety inspections in Nirmal, particularly after a special inspection team from Hyderabad identified stale food in multiple eateries in the area last October. Despite this, routine follow-up inspections appear to have been insufficient, leaving many questioning the safety of the food supply in the region.
As investigations continue, the incident has underscored the critical need for stringent food safety regulations and regular inspections to prevent such tragedies in the future.
