Khammam: Tension erupted in Khammam on Tuesday when a large group of Congress workers attacked the convoy of former minister T Harish Rao.
The incident occurred during Harish Raoโs visit, alongside former ministers P Sabitha Indra Reddy, G Jagadish Reddy, Puvvada Ajay Kumar, MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra, and former MP Nama Nageswara Rao, to Bokkalagadda and Venkatesh Nagar in Khammam city. They were distributing essential commodities to families affected by recent floods.
The situation escalated when some Congress workers began arguing with BRS workers over the presence of BRS leaders in the Manchikanti Nagar area. The confrontation turned violent, with Congress workers attacking BRS supporters and pelting stones at Harish Raoโs vehicle. The windshield of the car was damaged, and BRS worker Santhosh Reddy from Siddipet suffered a leg fracture. An elderly man also sustained a head injury.
The car of Ajay Kumar was also damaged, and his gunman was injured during the stone pelting. Approximately 15 people were involved in the attack, while only one Inspector from the Three-Town police station was on security duty, according to BRS leaders.
Harish Rao condemned the attack in a media statement, questioning whether Congressโ Praja Palana policy involved attacking opposition leaders. He stated that BRS leaders would not be intimidated by such acts, referencing their history of standing up to powerful adversaries. Jagadish Reddy accused Congress of orchestrating the attack and demanded strict action against the perpetrators. He criticized the Congress party for attacking former ministers who were helping flood-affected families and called for Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao to address the incident.
Harish Rao also called for Rs. 25 lakh in compensation for families who lost loved ones in the floods, highlighting that the current relief of Rs. 10,000 was inadequate given the significant losses suffered by affected families. He criticized the State and Central governments for their failure to support flood-affected residents and urged the State government to send an all-party delegation to New Delhi to seek additional assistance.
Later in the day, Harish Rao and his team lodged a complaint with Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt, seeking action against those responsible for the attack.
