Telangana Speaker Seeks Two-Month Extension from Supreme Court on BRS MLAs’ Disqualification Cases

These MLAs are accused of defecting to the Congress party following the 2023 assembly elections.

Hyderabad: Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has requested a two-month extension from the Supreme Court concerning the disqualification proceedings against ten MLAs from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). These MLAs are accused of defecting to the Congress party following the 2023 assembly elections.

The BRS had appealed to the Supreme Court regarding the disqualification of these defected legislators, leading the court to direct the Speaker to address the disqualification issues within three months, starting from the order given on July 31. The deadline for this action lapsed on October 31.

Although the Speaker was scheduled to continue the hearings on Friday, he has now sought an extension of two months for the proceedings related to the disqualification cases.

In compliance with the Supreme Court’s instructions, the Speaker has issued notices to the ten defected BRS MLAs. Out of these, eight have presented their affidavits, while two MLAs—Danam Nagender from Khairthabad and Kadiyam Srihari from Station Ghanpur—have requested additional time to provide their responses.

The questioning and cross-examination of four MLAs—Bandla Krishnamohan Reddy (Jogulamba Gadwal), Gudem Mahipal Reddy (Patancheru), Kale Yadaiah (Chevella), and T Prakash Goud (Rajendranagar)—began on September 29. During this process, the MLAs asserted that they had a technical affiliation with the BRS party. They stated that they had contacted Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to request assistance for the development of their respective areas.

Meanwhile, the hearings for six other MLAs, which include Danam Nagender, Kadiyam Srihari, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy (Banswada), A Gandhi (Serilingampally), T Venkat Rao (Bhadrachalam), and Dr. Sanjay (Jagityala), are still pending, and there has been no new information regarding their situation.

On October 23, during a party event in Banswada, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy openly acknowledged that he had secured an election victory using the BRS party symbol. In this situation, the Speaker requested an additional two months from the Supreme Court regarding the case.
