Three Palestinians Found Dead in a Tunnel Under Gaza-Egypt Border

The three bodies were removed from the tunnel by paramedics and rescue teams and sent to the hospital. The Hamas-run Interior Ministry's spokesman, Eyad al-Bozzom, said in a press statement on Friday.

Gaza: Medics and a security official said three Palestinian males were found dead inside a smuggling tunnel beneath the frontier between Gaza and Egypt.

According to the Xinhua news agency, paramedics were alerted that three labourers who worked in a smuggling tunnel had been missing since Thursday morning.

The three bodies were removed from the tunnel by paramedics and rescue teams and sent to the hospital. The Hamas-run Interior Ministry’s spokesman, Eyad al-Bozzom, said in a press statement on Friday.

Palestinian factions, including Hamas, have demanded Egyptian authorities to examine the reason of the three employees’ deaths, claiming that Egypt is to blame for their deaths.

After Hamas seized control of the coastal enclave and dismissed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ security forces in 2007, Israel placed a strict blockade on Gaza.

To transport fuel, food, medicine, and raw materials for building, industry, and agriculture, Palestinians dug hundreds of tunnels beneath Egypt’s borders to get over the embargo.

In 2013, the Egyptian army initiated a military operation against the tunnels, which resulted in the destruction of over 95 percent of them. (IANS)
