The Muslim community in Yunnan province, China, experienced deep sadness and anger when a mosque had its dome and minaret partially destroyed. International reports indicate that the historical mosque located in China’s Nagu district was illegally deemed unauthorized construction and subsequently demolished, sparking strong protests within the Muslim community.
The construction of the mosque was still ongoing when a court order was issued in 2020 to halt the building of the dome and minaret. The court’s decision stated that these structures were being constructed without proper authorization and were considered excessive ornamentation for the historic mosque.
Despite the mosque administration’s efforts to challenge the court’s decision, the dome and minaret were eventually demolished. This event triggered a surge of sorrow and outrage among the Muslim community, leading to public demonstrations in the streets.
Law enforcement authorities used tear gas to disperse the protesters, who responded by throwing stones at the police. The clash resulted in over 10 injuries, and the affected individuals received medical treatment at nearby hospitals.
