Uttam Kumar Reddy reviewed the Rs 394-crore Rajiv Gandhi Lift Irrigation Scheme in Suryapet district. The project aims to provide Krishna River water to nearly 14,000 acres and several villages facing chronic water shortages.

SURYAPET: Thousands of farming families living along the banks of the Krishna River in Suryapet district received fresh hope on Saturday as Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reviewed the progress of the Rs 394-crore Rajiv Gandhi Lift Irrigation Scheme, a project aimed at supplying Krishna River water to tail-end ayacut areas that have faced chronic water shortages for decades.

As hundreds of farmers gathered to greet Uttam Kumar Reddy on his birthday, the celebrations were marked not only by birthday wishes and bouquets but also by optimism surrounding a project that promises to transform agriculture in the region.

Rajiv Gandhi Lift Irrigation Scheme to Benefit Nearly 14,000 Acres

The Rs 394-crore Rajiv Gandhi Lift Irrigation Scheme has been designed to provide reliable irrigation water to nearly 14,000 acres under the Mukteshwarapuram Major Ayacut and Ganapuram Major Ayacut.

Apart from supplying irrigation water, the scheme is also expected to:

  • Fill tanks in the region
  • Improve water security
  • Support several villages in Kodad, Huzurnagar, Chilukuru, and neighbouring mandals

For generations, farmers in Krishna river bank villages have lived close to the Krishna River while struggling with inadequate irrigation facilities. The project aims to address this long-standing challenge.

Significant Progress Achieved in Rs 394-Crore Irrigation Project

According to the details reviewed by the Minister, substantial progress has already been achieved.

Project Progress

  • Total pressure-main length: 22 kilometres
  • Fabrication completed: 16 kilometres
  • Pipeline already laid: 6 kilometres

Major civil works are progressing steadily, while the remaining components of the project are expected to gather pace in the coming weeks.

Villages Expected to Benefit from the Lift Irrigation Scheme

The project is expected to benefit the following villages:

  • Kandibanda
  • Ramapur
  • Huzurnagar
  • Dondapadu
  • Ganapuram
  • Uchhipudi
  • Erravaram
  • Ramalakshmipuram
  • PK Banda
  • Kogarrayi
  • Palanagaram

For the farming community in these villages, the project represents more than an engineering initiative. It is seen as a long-awaited assurance that irrigation water will finally reach the last fields in the irrigation chain, which have often depended on erratic rainfall and declining groundwater levels.

Uttam Kumar Reddy Assures Water for Every Tail-End Ayacut Acre

Addressing farmers during the visit, N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that every acre in the tail-end ayacut receives its rightful share of water.

He emphasized that irrigation development must reach the most disadvantaged farmers and stated that no village should be denied the benefits of river water simply because it is located at the end of the canal network.

The Minister further noted that while the Nagarjuna Sagar Project remains the primary irrigation lifeline for the region, supplementary projects such as the Rajiv Gandhi Lift Irrigation Scheme are essential for bridging irrigation gaps and ensuring equitable distribution of water.

Farmers Place High Hopes on the Giant Pipeline Project

Farmers who attended the Minister’s birthday gathering described the completion of the irrigation project as the greatest gift the region could receive.

Many farmers expressed hope that the giant pipeline taking shape across the countryside would soon ensure dependable irrigation and improve agricultural productivity in the area.

For residents of Krishna river bank villages, the Krishna River is expected to become a reliable partner in their lives and livelihoods once the project is completed.

The Rs 394-crore Rajiv Gandhi Lift Irrigation Scheme, reviewed by Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy during his birthday visit with farmers in Suryapet district, is moving closer to reality. Designed to bring Krishna River water to nearly 14,000 acres under the Mukteshwarapuram Major and Ganapuram Major ayacuts, the project has already completed 16 kilometres of fabrication and laid 6 kilometres of pipeline out of the total 22 kilometres. With major works progressing steadily, farmers across Krishna bank villages are hopeful that decades of water scarcity will soon come to an end.
