Why Are Hyderabad’s Wine Shops Running Dry? The Reason Will Leave You Stunned

As the summer heat intensifies, Hyderabad is witnessing an unprecedented surge in beer consumption. According to the Excise Department, beer sales have more than doubled compared to April of the previous year.

As the summer heat intensifies, Hyderabad is witnessing an unprecedented surge in beer consumption. According to the Excise Department, beer sales have more than doubled compared to April of the previous year. This spike is attributed to individuals seeking relief from the sweltering temperatures, with many opting for chilled beer over traditional spirits like whiskey and brandy. The demand has been so high that local wine shops are struggling to keep up.

Shortage of Chilled Beer in Hyderabad and Surrounding Districts

The increased demand has led to a significant shortage of chilled beer in various parts of Hyderabad, including Ranga Reddy, Medchal, and Vikarabad districts. On average, wine shops now require 30-40 cases of beer daily to meet customer needs, a substantial increase from the usual 10-15 cases. Despite these efforts, many establishments are unable to provide the desired chilled beer due to supply constraints.

Revenue Boost for the State Government

The surge in beer sales has also translated into a substantial revenue boost for the state government. In April alone, the government earned ₹3,272.32 crore from liquor sales across Telangana, with over ₹1,160 crore generated from the greater Hyderabad districts. This increase is partly due to a 15% hike in beer prices implemented earlier this year, which raised the cost of beer bottles to between ₹120 and ₹370, depending on the brand and type.

Excise Department’s Response to the Crisis

The Excise Department is closely monitoring the situation and is in discussions with suppliers to address the shortage. While efforts are underway to replenish stocks, consumers are advised to plan their purchases accordingly and check with local wine shops for availability. The department is also exploring long-term solutions to ensure a steady supply of chilled beer during peak summer months.
