After meat, Halal row hits ice cream too

Mysuru: Following a spate of controversies on hijab, halal meat and Azaan, Ice Cream traders are being targeted in Karnataka over halal content.

A group of Muslim businessmen and vendors met National Commission for Minorities in Mysuru on Thursday expressing apprehension that they were being targeting by boycott groups.

They alleged that messages are taking rounds on social media calling for a boycott of a brand which had got its product halal-certified a few years ago, following a campaign by a particular community alleging that the ice cream were not fit to be consumed by them.

The firm sources clarified that Halal means any food that is suitable for consumption. It doesn’t pertain to meat products only. It further added that there is a lot of misconception that halal mean only meat products.
