Amid K’taka Hijab row, Philippine Coast Guard adds hijab in uniform
The Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, have already allowed the use of hijab as part of the official uniform for their Muslim personnel.
Manila: Even as the Muslim girl students are not allowed to attend classes wearing hijab in two colleges of Karnataka, the Philippine Coast Guard added hijab in uniform of its female Muslim personnel.
According to Arab News, the Philippine Coast Guard on Thursday announced that in a bid to persuade more Muslim women to join the service, it had approved a new dress policy allowing the use of headscarves in uniform.
There are 200 women out of 1,850 Muslim personnel in Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). 6 percent of the Philippine’s 110 population are Muslims.
Announcing that the Philippine Coast Guard has approved the inclusion of hijab in the uniform of female Muslim Coast Guard personnel, the force informed that the policy has been effective since last week.
Proposing the inclusion of the hijab in the force’s uniform last year, the service’s imam, Capt. Alicman S. Borowa, had argued that it would help foster inclusivity.
It must be noted that the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, have already allowed the use of hijab as part of the official uniform for their Muslim personnel.
Meanwhile, the hijab protests intensified in Karnataka which began weeks ago at the Government Girls PU college in Udupi district when six students were barred from classes for wearing the headscarf.
