Bihar Govt serious about exhumation cases from Katihar cemetery, inquiry ongoing, questions raised in assembly

The Bihar government stated in the assembly on Monday that it is taking the matter of exhuming and mutilating three bodies from a cemetery in Katihar district seriously, and an investigation into the matter is underway.

Patna: The Bihar government stated in the assembly on Monday that it is taking the matter of exhuming and mutilating three bodies from a cemetery in Katihar district seriously, and an investigation into the matter is underway.

During the question-answer session in the assembly, in response to a question from Congress member Shakil Ahmad Khan, Minister of Home Affairs Vijayendra Prasad Yadav stated that unidentified individuals had dug up the graves.

This incident, which was reported in an FIR filed last November 24, is being thoroughly investigated, they said. They added that committees are being formed under the district magistrate and superintendent of police in all districts to compile a list of sensitive cemeteries.

Cemeteries with potential Hindu-Muslim conflicts have been included in this list, and the encirclement of cemeteries has been based on priority criteria, though MLA funds can also be used to enclose cemeteries.

Unsatisfied with the government’s response, Congress member Shakil Ahmad demanded further action, stating that some individuals had exhumed three bodies and severed their heads and limbs, which could escalate into a more sensitive issue if not handled properly. He called on the government to construct boundary walls around cemeteries.

Akhtarul Iman of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) stated that any MLA cannot recommend using their funds to construct boundary walls around cemeteries not listed as sensitive.

Ajeet Kumar of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also expressed concern that the issue of exhuming bodies and mutilating them could become a more sensitive issue. He urged the government to prioritize encircling cemeteries based on sensitivity.

Popular Alam of the Communist Party of India Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) emphasized that this is a minority issue and urged the government to take it seriously.

Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav remarked that this is not a matter of minority or majority, but rather the matter is under investigation, and if the incident is proven true, the cemetery itself will become sensitive. He directed the government to pay attention to this matter.
