Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged the establishment of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance in the enclave, home to 2.3 million people. This call comes after diplomatic efforts to deliver aid to Gaza failed. In response to a recent attack by Hamas that resulted in over 1,300 casualties, Israel has imposed a complete blockade on Gaza and launched extensive air strikes.
Trudeau emphasized Canada’s support for Israel’s right to self-defense within the bounds of international law. However, he also stressed the importance of adhering to rules even in times of conflict. He condemned terrorism unequivocally, stating that Hamas’ actions are indefensible and do not represent the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Furthermore, Ottawa advised Canadians in Lebanon to consider leaving due to heightened security risks in the region. Canada has been employing military planes to facilitate the evacuation of individuals from Israel. The initial group of Canadians has safely crossed from the West Bank into Jordan, and efforts are underway to assist approximately 300 individuals in Gaza in reaching Egypt through the Rafah border crossing.
Regrettably, five Canadians lost their lives in the Hamas attack on Israel, while three remain unaccounted for.
