Couple sells baby to buy iPhone

Hyderabad: A couple in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district has been apprehended by the police on charges of selling their eight-month-old infant. The local residents grew suspicious when they noticed the couple flaunting a new mobile phone and promptly reported their suspicions to the authorities.

According to the locals, the couple, Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi, who also have a daughter, had been on a honeymoon trip across the state, visiting various places, including Digha and Mandarmani sea beaches.

Although the incident came to light on Sunday (July 24), it had occurred approximately one and a half months ago. The couple allegedly sold their baby for Rs 2 lakh and used the money to finance their travels and buy the phone. A neighbor named Laxmi Kundu informed India Today that Sathi would bring other individuals to their home, claiming that the couple had sold the baby to purchase opium and ganja.

Following investigations, the police have arrested another woman, Priyanka Ghosh, to whom the couple reportedly sold the infant. However, she has not yet disclosed further details and is currently in custody at Khardah police station.

Kamai Chowdhury, Jaydev’s father, stated that he initially believed the baby had been sent to the maternal uncle’s house but later learned that the child had been sold. Kamai Chowdhury also accused his son and daughter-in-law of assaulting him mentally and physically, and a complaint has been filed.

Meanwhile, Tarok Guha, a TMC councillor, shared that Jaydev was recently seen drunk and demanding to take his daughter, but her whereabouts were uncertain. Upon hearing about the baby being sold, Tarok Guha reprimanded Jaydev. The missing baby has raised concerns among the community as well.
