New Delhi: Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and former Rajya Sabha Member, passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 72.

Yechury had been admitted to the ICU at AIIMS, Delhi, where he was receiving treatment for a severe respiratory infection. He had been on a ventilator for the past few days, with a team of doctors overseeing his care.

Yechury’s political journey began under the mentorship of veteran communist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who played a pivotal role during the National Front government of V.P. Singh and the United Front government of 1996-97.

Yechury joined the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974 and became a CPI(M) member the following year. During the Emergency, he was also arrested for his activism.

Under Yechury’s leadership, the CPI(M) strongly opposed the policies of the Congress-led UPA government, establishing him as a formidable leader within the party. His passing leaves a significant void in Indian politics, with colleagues remembering him as a dedicated and selfless leader.
