Canberra: Fatima Payman, on Monday, became the first Muslim woman to wear the hijab in the Australian Parliament.

According to ABC News, Ms Payman won Western Australia’s sixth and final Senate, which changed the fate of the Labor Party.

The final Senate results are in – for Western Australia. WA has elected the following people:

1. Sue Lines
2. Michaelia Cash
3. Glenn Sterle
4. Dean Smith
5. Dorinda Cox

Ms. Payman, 27, is the third youngest senator in Senate history. A former refugee from Afghanistan, Ms Payman’s victory comes on World Refugee Day.

Taking to twitter she announced her election as a Senator for Western Australia. Thanking everyone she wrote, “WE WON!!! I’m proud to announce that I’ve officially been elected as a Senator for Western Australia. Thank you everyone for your love and support! We did it!”
