Former Afghan refugee, becomes Australian parliament’s first hijab-wearing Muslim woman
Fatima Payman is the first woman to wear the hijab in the Australian Parliament
Canberra: Fatima Payman, on Monday, became the first Muslim woman to wear the hijab in the Australian Parliament.
According to ABC News, Ms Payman won Western Australia’s sixth and final Senate, which changed the fate of the Labor Party.
Ms. Payman, 27, is the third youngest senator in Senate history. A former refugee from Afghanistan, Ms Payman’s victory comes on World Refugee Day.
Taking to twitter she announced her election as a Senator for Western Australia. Thanking everyone she wrote, “WE WON!!! I’m proud to announce that I’ve officially been elected as a Senator for Western Australia. Thank you everyone for your love and support! We did it!”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was quick to offer his congratulations on Twitter.
