Good news for aspiring medical students of Telangana

In a groundbreaking development for aspiring medical students in Telangana, the State government has issued a Government Order (GO Ms No 72) today, amending the Telangana State Medical Colleges Admissions Rules. This amendment will result in the availability of 1820 additional MBBS seats starting from the upcoming academic year of 2023-24.

The release of these seats, which is equivalent to establishing approximately 18 new medical colleges, comes as welcome news for local students. Under the revised amendment, the State government has mandated that 100 percent of the medical seats in colleges established after June 2, 2014 (the date of Telangana’s formation), be reserved exclusively for Telangana students.

Previously, only 85 percent of seats in such medical colleges were allocated to Telangana students, with the remaining 15 percent open to competition from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh aspirants.

However, with this latest amendment, all medical seats in colleges established post-statehood will now be reserved solely for students from Telangana.

Prior to the formation of the state, Telangana had a total of 20 medical colleges, including both government and private institutions. As of 2023-24, the number of medical colleges in Telangana has risen to 56, showcasing significant growth in the healthcare education sector. Similarly, the number of MBBS seats has also increased from 2850 before 2014 to 8340 across government and private hospitals in 2023.

Speaking on the matter, Health Minister T. Harish Rao expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that local students from Telangana can fulfill their dreams of becoming doctors. He emphasized that these additional 1820 medical seats would serve as a major boost for aspiring medical students in Telangana.

This move by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao is expected to have a positive impact on the overall healthcare system in Telangana, fostering the growth of medical education and enabling more students to pursue their passion for medicine.
