A release here on Tuesday said, the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Gandhi Hospital, led by Prof Dr K. Nagarjuna (Prof & HOD), Dr S Srinivas, Dr Kavimozhy ilakkiya, Dr A. Raj Kiran, and Dr K.Phanindra, have done 40 safe splenectomies over the past 3 years and Dr K Nagarjuna himself has performed 70 splenectomy operations for thalassemia children.


Thalassemia children require splenectomy due to the increased demand for blood transfusion. These children are high-risk morbid patients with bleeding tendencies (coagulopathy), which may result in the appearance of facial bone abnormality, pale, icteric look, enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy), gross abdominal distension, and are not appealing to any surgeon to readily perform splenectomy.


Chandrakant Agarwal, President (TSCS), and Dr Suman Jain, CEO & Secretary (TSCS), expressed their appreciation for the great quality of service provided by the diligent and enthusiastic pediatric surgeons at Gandhi Hospital.


The post-operative thalassemia children have a smooth sailing in the environment of high-quality service with a corporate ambiance enriched with a ‘Children’s play den.’


The ‘Children’s play den’ is like a heavenly abode decked with motorized cars, television, a well-maintained large aquarium, and the whole area, including the ward, is enlightened with a 6-feet statue of the spirituality of Lord Buddha, representing spiritual health.


Thalassemia Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) requested the Telangana government to recognize the department of Pediatric Surgery for providing excellent healthcare for thalassemia children by performing safe splenectomies.
