Hyderabad: Nampally railway station to get a new look with Rs 309 cr

Hyderabad: The historic Nampally railway station in Telangana, one of the oldest in the region, is undergoing a transformation through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. South Central Railway officials have devised a comprehensive plan to enhance its visual appeal.

Initially named the Hyderabad Deccan Railway Station, Nampally station was constructed in 1907 by Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII, the last Nizam of Hyderabad. The term “Nam-pally” originates from Urdu, signifying a damp and wet locale where it was situated. “Nam” translates to wet or moist, and “pally” means place. Although initially utilized mainly for freight until 1921, the Hyderabad Deccan Railway Station, or Nampally Station, later welcomed its first passenger train.

A senior SCR officer revealed that the daily passenger count of around 28,230 will increase significantly following the station’s facelift. The revamped station will be equipped to accommodate approximately 48,601 passengers per day, with a capacity of roughly 4,800 during peak hours. The station, currently featuring six platforms and three escalators, will expand to encompass 15 lifts and 10 escalators after the renovation. The existing 328 sqm waiting area is set to expand to an expansive 1,624.37 sqm.

Additionally, the station’s parking capacity will undergo substantial growth. Presently accommodating 300 two-wheelers and 70 four-wheelers, the revamped station will have space for around 900 two-wheelers and 210 four-wheelers. Plans also include the construction of a basement spanning 9942.8 sqm. The comprehensive transformation of Nampally station is estimated to cost Rs 309 crore.

To enhance accessibility, existing structures hindering smooth access will be removed, and improved lighting will be installed. The station will be designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities (Divyangans) and will incorporate green energy for an environmentally friendly approach. All renovation efforts are slated for completion by the end of 2025.

Arun Kumar Jain, SCR General Manager, emphasized that the Amrit Bharat Stations initiative will provide rail users with a novel experience. These modernized stations, boasting cutting-edge architecture and top-notch amenities, are envisioned as urban hubs with a focus on long-term planning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone on August 6 for the development of 508 railway stations nationwide under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which encompasses 50 stations in the South Central Railway region, including Nampally.
