Zubair Anjum, an executive producer at Geo News, arrived at his residence in Karachi’s Model Colony on Tuesday night, as stated by his family. Zubair Anjum’s sibling has confirmed that he returned home one day after being forcibly taken by unidentified individuals.
According to Wajahat Anjum, Zubair’s brother, men dressed as police officers and in plain clothes took Zubair from his home late on Monday night. Witnesses in the neighborhood reported the arrival of two police vans and double-cabin vehicles, which took Zubair away from his house near the Model Colony intersection.
Wajahat mentioned that the individuals who took Zubair were armed and forcefully entered their home, even mistreating family members. However, the reason behind the arrest remains unknown.
Wajahat explained, “They demanded Zubair bhai and took him away at gunpoint, also confiscating his mobile phone.” He also mentioned that they seized the digital video recorder (DVR) of the CCTV system installed in the neighborhood.
Speaking to reporters, Zubair’s brother stated, “The police did not provide any explanation for the arrest. They even prevented him from wearing his slippers. We repeatedly asked about the matter.”
He added that some of the individuals were in uniform while others were masked, except for one person. Wajahat said, “They all had TT pistols in their hands.”
A missing case was registered at the Model Colony Police Station. However, the senior superintendent of police in Korangi stated that his force had no information regarding Zubair Anjum’s arrest. He confirmed that no police station or unit reported detaining the media professional.
Several organizations advocating for press freedom and journalist unions, including the Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners (CPJMP), Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ), Karachi Press Club, and the Pakistan Federation Union of Journalists (PFUJ), condemned Zubair’s disappearance.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed his regret over Zubair Anjum’s ‘arrest’ and denied claims that the police had taken him into custody. He urged law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter and stated, “Such arrests should be halted now.”
