Karnataka girl Ilham proves hijab is not a barrier to education

Interestingly hijabi girl Ilham bags the 2nd highest place in science in a state where hijab is banned.

Mangaluru: By emerging as the second topper with 597 marks in science stream in Karnataka second-year Pre-University exams, Ilham, a hijab student, has proved that hijab is not a hindrance in education.

Interestingly she bags the 2nd highest place in science in a state where hijab is banned. A student of St. Aloysius PU College in Mangaluru, Ilham wants to study clinical psychology.

“Since my Class 10 days, I developed a fascination towards the working of the brain. I want to pursue a career in clinical psychology,” she was quoted by The Hind as saying.

Ilham missed 1st rank with just 1 mark as Simran Rao of Bengaluru topped the examination in science stream with 598 marks.

The controversy over the hijab in Karnataka erupted in late December last year, when six Muslim girls at state-run Udupi Women’s Pre-University college were not allowed to enter the classroom wearing the hijab, a headscarf worn by Muslim women.
