K’taka college suspends six Muslim girls triggering hijab row

Bengaluru: Triggering the hijab row, Uppinangady first grade college in Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka has suspended six Muslim girl students on Thursday for wearing their uniform dupatta as a hijab in the classroom.

A staff meeting was called in which the decision to suspend the Muslim students was taken. College officials said they took this step as they felt it would provoke other students to protest. Times Now reported.

Upholding the hijab ban in school and colleges, in March this year, Karnataka High Court said, wearing of head covering by Muslim women was not an essential religious practice in Islam. It also dismissed writ petitions filed by Muslim girl students seeking permission to wear hijab in colleges.

The hijab controversy erupted in January this year after a government college in Udupi banned six Muslim girls from attending classes in hijab.
