As part of the electrification of newly constructed lines, 64 route kilometers between Devarkadra and Krishna have been electrified in a mission-mode effort.

The newly constructed Broad Gauge line between Krishna and Devarkadra, a part of the Mahabubnagar – Munirabad new line project, has been completed and recently commissioned.

Additionally, DEMU passenger train services were introduced on this new section in October 2023, according to an SCR press release issued on Friday.

The electrification of the Devarkadra – Krishna section will enhance connectivity to various significant cities in the Southern States, including Raichur, Guntakal, Bellary, Hubli, and Goa from Hyderabad.

This will provide an alternative route for transporting iron ore and other bulk commodities such as cement and steel, which were previously transported along different routes.

The project is expected to expand the rail network between Hyderabad and the mining belt of Karnataka, benefiting both passenger and freight traffic.

The Devarkadra – Krishna section was executed by South Central Railway as part of the Munirabad – Mahabubnagar new line project. The remaining portion between Munirabad and Raichur is being carried out by South Western Railway and is progressing rapidly.

Once the entire project is completed, it will considerably reduce the distance between Secunderabad and Hubli, Goa, and beyond by over 100 kilometers.

The use of electric traction for train operations helps reduce carbon emissions and is environmentally friendly. It ensures seamless train movement by avoiding the need to change traction power, reduces delays for both passenger and freight trains, and improves overall train speed. In terms of railways, it results in significant fuel cost savings and enhances operational efficiency.

Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager of South Central Railway, commended the efforts of the construction, electrical, and Hyderabad Division teams for the prompt completion of electrification.

He noted that this achievement has paved the way for more convenient and diverse electric traction operations toward Southern regions.
