Supreme Court justice grilled over justice to Muslim minorities in India at England’s College

New Delhi: Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud was grilled during a seminar on ‘Protecting human rights and preserving civil liberties: The role of courts in a democracy’, held at King’s College in London on Monday. During the seminar, he was asked about the justice handed to Muslim minorities in India through the apex court. He was bombarded with questions pertaining to cases like the use of bulldozer in the country to demolish houses and shops arbitrarily, the hijab row, the Babri Masjid verdict, and even the revocation of Article 370 whereby Jammu and Kashmir was stripped off its special status.
However, Justice Chandrachud mostly evaded the questions citing the fact that the cases were currently in Court and he would not be able to comment on them. On the question of Babri Masjid case also– where the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple – Justice Chandrachud did not comment saying that he was part of the Bench hence he did not think it right to be part of a critique of the judgment. In the case pertaining to bulldozer action against Muslim, he informed that the SC’s vacation bench had taken up the matter and issued a notice on the matter.
He blamed the media for not highlighting the cases that the top Court was dealing with, not just pertaining to Muslims, but all marginalised communities.
