Water Supply Troubles in Hyderabad: HMWSSB Responds to Rising Complaints

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has acknowledged a rise in complaints regarding low water supply in several parts of the city.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has acknowledged a rise in complaints regarding low water supply in several parts of the city. On Thursday, 3rd April 2025, the board confirmed that areas like Kukatpally, KPHB, Hafeezpet, Kondapur, Manikonda, Khairatabad, Red Hills, Nampally, Himayatnagar, Tarnaka, Malkajgiri, Uppal, Tukaramgate, and other nearby localities have reported water shortage issues.

Complaints and Use of Motor Pumps

HMWSSB officials revealed that some residents were found using motor pumps to draw water, which has exacerbated the supply issues. A board official warned that homes caught using motor pumps would face water supply cutoffs. He said, “If these households are found guilty of using motor pumps, their water supply will be cut off.”

Pipeline Repair Work Impacting Water Supply

The HMWSSB also clarified that the ongoing pipeline repair work between Singapore and Khanpur is contributing to reduced water supply. The official explained, “As a result, the amount of water being distributed has decreased, leading to low pressure in several areas.”

Increased Water Tanker Demand Due to Festivals

Amidst these challenges, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy highlighted an increase in water tanker bookings during the festivals of Ugadi and Ramadan. He noted that many tanker drivers were on leave, causing a shortage of available staff. “Due to the reduced availability of staff, areas like Sheikhpet, Shapur Nagar, Budwel, Asif Nagar, NTR Nagar, Bhavani Nagar, Chilkalguda, Shapur Nagar-2, Moula Ali, Gajularamaram, Erragadda, Gachibowli-2, Vengal Rao Nagar, Yelareddyguda, and Venkatgiri Filling Stations are facing increased demand for tankers,” he added.

Additional Work Hours for Staff

In light of the shortage of workers, Reddy instructed the officials to extend working hours and ensure that staff shortages are addressed. The board is actively working to ensure that the water supply issue is managed effectively.

The situation remains under close monitoring, and residents are advised to use water judiciously while the repair work and tanker supply challenges are resolved.
