Zubair “maliciously targeted”; case “borders on absurdity”: Court told

New Delhi: Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of fact-checking website AltNews has been produced before a Delhi court. He was arrested by the cyber unit of the Delhi Police on Monday on charges of allegedly hurting religious sentiments following a complaint by a social media user who referred to a tweet from 2018.

Appearing for Zubair, Advocate Vrinda Grover, argued before the court that the AltNews website co-founder was being “maliciously targeted” and that the entire case “borders on absurdity.” Indian Express reported.

She pointed out that Zubair is a fact-checker and journalist, who calls out people who post fake news and videos and therefore, they don’t like him. She also told the court that the police was ‘abusing its power.’

Zubair’s lawyer further argued that Zubair’s post is an image of a Rishikesh Mukherjee film. This is a joke on the Honeymooners. Where does the tweet insult any religion? She asked.

Meanwhile, the police have sought a five-day custody of Zubair.
