Shab-e-Meraj 2026: Flyovers to Remain Closed in Hyderabad for Safety and Traffic Control

Shab-e-Meraj 2026: Hyderabad Police to close most flyovers from 10 pm on January 16 for traffic control and public safety. Citizens advised to use alternate routes.

Hyderabad, January 16: In view of Shab-e-Meraj 2026, the Hyderabad City Police have decided to close most flyovers across the city to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management. The restrictions will be in force from 10:00 pm on January 16 till late night of January 17.

The move comes as a precautionary step to prevent accidents and maintain law and order during the holy night, which sees large public movement across the city.

Flyovers to Remain Closed During Shab-e-Meraj Night

According to the Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, D Joel Davis, all flyovers in Hyderabad will remain closed during the specified hours except a few key routes.

Flyovers exempted from closure:

  • Greenlands Flyover
  • PV Narasimha Rao Expressway
  • Langer Houz Flyover

Flyovers likely to be closed as per need:

  • Necklace Road Flyover
  • Telangana Thalli Flyover
  • Shaikpet Flyover
  • Manmohan Singh Flyover
  • Bahadurpura X Road Flyover

Police said the closures will be implemented based on traffic conditions and crowd movement.

Decision Taken to Prevent Untoward Incidents

The Hyderabad City Police stated that the decision was taken keeping public safety as the top priority, especially after past incidents during Shab-e-Meraj.

Last year, a tragic accident on the Manmohan Singh Flyover, while travelling from Nehru Zoological Park towards Aramghar, resulted in the death of three minor children. The incident highlighted the need for strict traffic control during late-night religious observances.

Special Advisory for Parents and Citizens

Police have issued a special appeal to parents to closely monitor their children and not allow minors to ride motorcycles or drive vehicles during the night.

Citizens are also advised to:

  • Use alternative routes
  • Follow traffic restrictions strictly
  • Cooperate fully with police personnel on duty
  • Avoid unnecessary late-night travel

A moment of negligence, police warned, could lead to irreversible loss.

Traffic Updates and Emergency Helpline

For real-time traffic updates and route diversions, citizens are advised to follow the official social media handles of Hyderabad Traffic Police on X (Twitter) and Facebook.

In case of emergencies, the traffic helpline number 9010203626 has been activated for public assistance.

Significance of Shab-e-Meraj

Shab-e-Meraj, also known as the Night of Ascension, is observed on the 27th night of the Islamic month of Rajab. It marks the sacred journey of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Bait-ul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) and then through the heavens.

The night is dedicated to prayers, worship, and seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

Appeal for Safe and Peaceful Observance

Hyderabad City Police have urged citizens to respect the sanctity of Shab-e-Meraj, follow traffic rules, and prioritize the safety of themselves and others. Public cooperation, officials said, is essential to ensure a peaceful and accident-free night across the city.
