Strong Youth Support, No Alliance Stand
Vijay gained strong support among youth and clearly stated that he would not form alliances with any political party. He was seen by supporters as “GOT (Greatest of All Time)”.
He had already built a strong base through:
- 85,000 fan clubs consolidated in 2009 into Vijay Makkal Iyakkam
- The organisation initially functioned as a welfare platform
In the 2011 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, this organisation supported the AIADMK-led alliance, marking his early political involvement.
From Fan Movement to Electoral Success
In 2020, Vijay’s father registered Vijay Makkal Iyakkam as a political party, but Vijay publicly dismissed this move. After a legal dispute, the registered entity “All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam” was disbanded.

- Won 115 out of 169 seats

TVK Manifesto Targets Women and Youth
The Tamiliga Vetri Kazhagam manifesto included:
- Subsidies on diesel
- Insurance and relief funds for fishermen

- Six free gas cylinders per year
- 8 grams of gold as a wedding gift for girls
He also promised a “caste count” and accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam of corrupt rule.

Tamil Nadu has a history of film personalities entering politics, including MGR, Annadurai, and Jayalalithaa becoming Chief Ministers.
Most exit polls predicted that the DMK would return to power, but only one survey predicted Vijay’s victory.
