Cab, Auto and Delivery Services Shut in Hyderabad as Thousands of Drivers and Gig Workers Go on Statewide Strike

Hyderabad: Thousands of cab drivers, auto-rickshaw drivers and delivery workers observed a statewide strike across Telangana on Wednesday, disrupting app-based transport and delivery services in Hyderabad and several other cities.

The strike was called jointly by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and the Telangana App-Based Drivers Forum. A large number of cab drivers, auto drivers, food delivery partners, courier workers and goods transport drivers participated in the protest.

As a result of the strike, services offered by several ride-hailing and online delivery platforms were partially affected in many areas. Commuters faced difficulties booking cabs, while customers experienced delays in the delivery of food and other essential items.

The protesting workers said they have been struggling with low earnings, rising fuel costs, high commission deductions by app-based platforms and the lack of adequate welfare benefits. They demanded that the government and the companies revise fares and delivery charges to ensure fair and sustainable incomes.

The workers also called for comprehensive social security measures, including health insurance, accident coverage, medical benefits and other welfare schemes for gig and platform workers.

Union leaders warned that if their demands are not addressed at the earliest, they would intensify their agitation in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the strike caused inconvenience to commuters and customers across the state, prompting calls for an early resolution that safeguards both workers’ rights and uninterrupted public services.
