Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress on Tuesday staged a protest near Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad against the alleged lathi-charge on students during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and the reported arrest of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The protest was attended by the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president, several senior party leaders, and a large number of Congress workers. Demonstrators raised slogans against the Central government, alleging that the use of force against students and action against Opposition leaders was contrary to democratic values.

Congress leaders demanded that the concerns of the protesting students in Delhi be addressed and called for an end to what they described as action against peaceful protesters. They also condemned Rahul Gandhi’s reported arrest, stating that peaceful protest is a constitutional right in a democracy.

Tension briefly prevailed when protesters attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan but were stopped by police barricades.

Police later detained several Congress leaders and party workers as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. Among those detained were the TPCC president and senior Congress leader Faheem Qureshi, who is also referred to by the party as its “Shadow Chief Minister.”

The detention of Faheem Qureshi drew political attention, with party leaders highlighting that the incident took place in Telangana, where the Congress is currently in power.

Police said the preventive detentions were carried out to maintain peace and prevent any breach of law and order in the vicinity of Raj Bhavan.

The protest is expected to add momentum to the ongoing political debate over the Delhi student demonstrations, the reported detention of Rahul Gandhi, and the Opposition’s response to the developments.
