Eqbal Hussain Takes Charge as Acting Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia as Najma Akhtar Retires


Eqbal Hussain, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has assumed the role of acting Vice-Chancellor following the conclusion of Najma Akhtar’s historic tenure as the first woman in the position.

According to The Indian Express, Akhtar with reflected on her term, highlighting achievements such as faculty promotions, campus expansion, and the establishment of a Medical College. Her tenure, concluding upon turning 70, concludes with a commitment to continue serving her community and country, with an undecided next role.

In an official statement, the university acknowledged Hussain’s assurance to uphold the institution’s interests, emphasizing the university’s achievements under Akhtar’s leadership, including high rankings in NAAC and NIRF. Notably, JMI secured the third position in the NIRF 2023 rankings with a Grade A++ from NAAC.

The statement further outlines the transitional period, stating that Eqbal Hussain will officiate as Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the university’s statutes until a new appointment is made. This transition follows the completion of Najma Akhtar’s tenure on November 12, 2023.

Eqbal Hussain, appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor in September, brings a wealth of experience to the role, starting his teaching career in 1990 and joining JMI in 1994. His academic journey includes teaching at Zanzibar University and achieving the rank of professor at JMI in 2013. His commitment to academic and administrative matters is emphasized as he takes on the responsibilities of officiating Vice-Chancellor.
