Hyderabad: South Central Railway (SCR) reached unprecedented milestones in its freight operations, recording its best-ever monthly performance in January 2024.
The zone accomplished an origin loading of 131.22 million tonnes, marking the highest loading in any month and surpassing the previous record of 12.517 MTs achieved in May 2023. Additionally, the freight loading exhibited a remarkable 7 percent growth compared to the same month in the previous year (January 2023), a SCR statement said on Monday.
The exceptional loading performance was mirrored in earnings, with SCR achieving Rs. 1,296.73 crore in originating freight revenue during January 2024, the highest monthly earnings in the freight segment since its inception. This surpassed the previous best of Rs. 1,280.77 crore earned in December 2022, representing a 6.4 percent increase compared to January 2023.
The significant contributors to the record-breaking freight loading included coal, transporting 6.497 MT during the month, and cement loading at 3.278 MT. Other notable commodities contributing to the overall freight loading of SCR were foodgrains (0.851 MT), fertilisers (0.851 MT), iron ore (0.423 MT), raw materials for steel plants (0.375 MT), containers (0.200 MT), and other goods (0.647 MT).
The Zone has actively focused on enhancing its freight traffic through various initiatives and special measures, including streamlining waggon supply and monitoring freight train movements.
Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, SCR, commended the operating and commercial teams for this outstanding achievement. Despite operating special trains and engaging in major infrastructure works, he attributed meticulous planning in both passenger and freight operations to this remarkable success.
Jain applauded the efforts of the entire team and urged them to maintain the momentum for achieving record annual performance in the freight segment during the current financial year.
