Hyderabad: A serial fraudster couple engaged in matrimonial scams was unearthed.
The couple, identified as Maddugari Chandrakanth (48) and his wife (32) of Aparna Towers, Tadepalli, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, cheated multiple people in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, a police release said on Saturday.
On January 20, 2024, a case of matrimonial fraud was registered against Maddugari Chandrakanth, a native of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The victim, who met Chandrakanth on the TeluguShaadi.com app in December 2023, reported the incident to the authorities.
Chandrakanth, posing as a doctor planning a hospital chain business in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, exploited the victim emotionally and convinced her to lend him approximately Rs 6 lakhs to resolve alleged income tax and settlement issues.
The victim, who borrowed money from friends and took a loan, discovered the fraud when she verified the provided ATM slip at HDFC Bank, revealing expenditures on hotels and ATM withdrawals.
The victim has filed a complaint, providing details of Chandrakanth’s contact information and LinkedIn profile and urging action against Shaadi.com for facilitating the fraud.
Facing financial setbacks, Chandrakanth engaged in various fraudulent activities, including matrimony scams, business investment fraud, and job fraud.
He portrayed himself as a high-profile individual, posing as a doctor, and expanded his fraudulent activities to metropolitan areas like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Vishakhapatnam, and Chennai.
In partnership with Natta Bhavani, Chandrakanth registered on Shaadi.com with fake profiles, weaving false narratives about frozen bank accounts and income tax issues to cheat multiple victims.
Chandrakanth and Bhavani employed various SIM cards and multiple bank accounts, forging documents and creating fake ATM slips to deceive their victims. Chandrakanth had previously been arrested by Gachibowli Police Station for cheating on a mobile shop owner.
Multiple cases are registered against them in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, with four identified cases, including Cyber Crime PS, Gachibowli PS, Bellampally II Town PS, and Market PS Hyderabad.
