Telangana Steps Up EV Push with Charging Stations, Scrappage Policy and Electric Buses: Ponnam Prabhakar

Telangana accelerates its EV revolution with new charging stations, a vehicle scrappage policy, and electric buses, says Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.

Telangana is rolling out comprehensive measures to drive the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said in the Assembly on Tuesday. The state is expanding EV charging infrastructure, strengthening incentives, and accelerating the shift to electric buses, aiming for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Charging Stations Across the State

Responding to questions on the EV policy and transport issues, the minister said charging stations are being set up at:

  • Government offices
  • Community halls
  • Educational institutions
  • Gated communities and private institutions
  • Collectorates, restaurants, and tourist destinations

Charging facilities are also being rolled out through Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (REDCO) to ensure wider access.

EV Policy and Sales Milestone

Ponnam Prabhakar said the EV policy, notified through GO 41, is designed to secure a sustainable future for coming generations. He noted that over one lakh electric vehicles have already been sold in the state this year, reflecting growing public adoption.

Despite incurring around ₹900 crore in incentive-related losses, the government has kept the EV policy in force and continues to invest in charging infrastructure via REDCO.

Vehicle Scrappage Policy Introduced

The minister highlighted the introduction of a vehicle scrappage policy—absent earlier—for vehicles older than 15 years. Key points include:

  • Green tax increased by ₹30,000
  • Mandatory disposal of old vehicles through scrapping
  • Incentives for owners who participate in the scrappage program

RTC’s Shift to Electric Buses

In a major boost to clean public transport, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) is retrofitting diesel buses to convert them into electric buses, the minister said, adding that this will reduce emissions and operating costs.

What This Means for Telangana

The multi-pronged approach—charging expansion, incentives, scrappage, and electric buses—positions Telangana to lead India’s EV transition while cutting pollution and improving urban mobility.
