Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court is addressing a distinctive case brought forward by an elderly man who claimed that CCTV cameras installed near his residence were infringing on his privacy.

On Wednesday, Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy of the Telangana High Court considered a writ petition submitted by sexagenarian Bhiram Sunil Kumar, a resident of Bhoodevinagar Colony in Alwal. Kumar challenged the placement of CCTV cameras by private individuals, arguing that they were aimed directly at his home, thereby violating his privacy. Despite his repeated objections and requests for the cameras to be redirected since 2022, the authorities had not taken any action.

Kumar’s lawyer, T. Rahul, argued that the camera installations constituted a blatant invasion of privacy. He pointed out that while the cameras were placed on privately owned property, the ownership did not grant the right to compromise the privacy of Kumar or any other residents. He also called for the court to establish guidelines for the installation of CCTV cameras in residential neighborhoods.

In response to these claims, Justice Vijaysen Reddy ordered that notices be issued to the parties involved in the camera installation. The court will continue to examine the privacy issues raised and will determine the necessary steps regarding the placement of CCTV cameras in residential areas.
