Termites Devour Woman’s Rs 18 Lakh Savings for Daughter’s Wedding in Bank Locker

A woman from Moradabad, UP, Alka Pathak, learned that her significant savings of nearly Rs 18 lakh, earmarked for her daughter's wedding, were devoured by termites within the bank's locker.

Hyderabad: In the city’s Civil Lines police station area, the Ashiana branch of Bank of Baroda has launched an investigation following a distressing discovery. A woman from Moradabad, UP, Alka Pathak, learned that her significant savings of nearly Rs 18 lakh, earmarked for her daughter’s wedding, were devoured by termites within the bank’s locker.

Alka had made this deposit in October 2022. The incident came to light when she recently visited the bank to access her funds, only to find her currency notes severely damaged by termites. She promptly reported the incident to the bank manager.

Vishal Dixit, the lead district manager of Bank of Baroda, stated, “I received information that the cash stored in the bank locker had been consumed by termites. The bank is investigating to determine the cause behind this incident.”

The locker policy guidelines explicitly prohibit the storage of cash or currency. They also state, “The bank cannot be held responsible for the damage to any perishable items kept in the locker.”

Alka remarked, “I had taken proper precautions while storing the currency notes in the locker, but the bank failed to ensure adequate pest control measures. Officials have promised a thorough investigation.”
