Smart Meters to Be Introduced for Electricity Connections Across Telangana

According to the proposed plan, smart meters will be installed for all new electricity connections in the state. The Congress government is also considering the phased replacement of conventional meters for existing domestic, commercial and other consumers.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government is preparing to introduce smart electricity meters across the state, beginning with new power connections and gradually extending the system to existing consumers in a phased manner.

According to the proposed plan, smart meters will be installed for all new electricity connections in the state. The Congress government is also considering the phased replacement of conventional meters for existing domestic, commercial and other consumers.

The smart meters are expected to automatically record electricity consumption at the end of each month, including midnight readings on the 30th or 31st, and transmit the data electronically to the power distribution companies. This system is expected to enable the timely generation and delivery of electricity bills to consumers.

The government is also reportedly planning to make prepaid smart meters mandatory for all government offices. Under the prepaid system, electricity consumers would recharge their accounts in advance, with power charges deducted based on actual consumption.

However, concerns have reportedly been raised over the higher cost of smart meters compared to conventional electricity meters. Telangana’s power distribution companies (DISCOMs) are said to be considering ways to recover the additional expenditure, with the possibility of the financial burden being passed on to consumers.

The phased implementation of smart meters is expected to modernise electricity billing and monitoring across Telangana. However, the proposed recovery of installation costs from consumers could become a key issue as the government moves forward with the plan.
