HYDRAA, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation Review Monsoon Preparedness; 188 Waterlogging Points Identified

HYDRAA and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation reviewed monsoon preparedness measures. Officials identified 188 waterlogging points, deployed emergency teams, and discussed flood gates for nine lakes.

Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath has directed officials of all departments to work in coordination to ensure that city residents do not face difficulties during the upcoming monsoon season. During a review meeting held on Friday with Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, officials discussed measures to address rain-related challenges, including 188 identified waterlogging points within the municipal limits. HYDRAA said immediate action would be taken on any flooding or waterlogging issues brought to its notice.

Coordination Among Departments Key to Solving Monsoon Challenges

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said continuous coordination among various departments is essential for resolving problems during the rainy season.

After previously reviewing monsoon preparedness with officials from all divisions under GHMC and CMC limits, the Commissioner held a special meeting on Friday with MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy to discuss issues likely to arise in the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation area.

According to officials, MMC has identified:

  • 188 waterlogging points
    • 69 major waterlogging points
    • 39 medium-category waterlogging points
    • 80 minor waterlogging points

Emergency Teams Ready for Monsoon Duty

Officials informed the meeting that:

  • 12 Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, each consisting of 5 members, are available.
  • 74 Monsoon Emergency Teams (METs), each consisting of 4 members, have been deployed.
  • 175 static personnel will work continuously at the field level.

Officials stated that additional personnel would be deployed if required.

HYDRAA Special Force (SF) personnel will also support the monsoon preparedness operations.

Committees to Be Formed at Various Levels

A.V. Ranganath instructed officials to maintain continuous coordination among:

  • HYDRAA
  • Municipal Corporation
  • Traffic Police
  • Water Board
  • Irrigation Department
  • Electricity Department
  • UBD Department

He suggested forming committees at different levels, from the Commissionerate level to the Division level, involving officials from all concerned departments to ensure prompt resolution of issues.

The Commissioner also directed authorities to identify dilapidated buildings and large advertisement hoardings that could pose risks during heavy rains and take appropriate action.

MMC Requests Flood Gates for Nine Lakes

MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy informed the meeting that flood gates need to be installed at nine lakes within the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation limits.

He also stated that the corporation has:

  • 14 circles under its jurisdiction.
  • Requested HYDRAA to increase DRF teams from 12 to 14 by adding two more teams.

Vinay Krishna Reddy further said that desilting works in all stormwater drains within the municipal limits have been completed.

He assured that all departments would work together during the monsoon season to address public issues effectively.

Network Mapping of Drains Suggested

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath stated that completing the network mapping of drainage channels would help manage rainwater flow more efficiently.

He suggested marking the locations of manholes on nearby walls so that issues can be addressed quickly during flooding situations.

The Commissioner also said that HYDRAA’s Control Room would function as the central coordination point for sharing:

  • Weather alerts
  • Emergency information
  • Departmental coordination updates

with all concerned departments in real time.

According to him, proper planning and coordinated efforts would help authorities effectively tackle monsoon-related challenges.

Before the discussion concluded, HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah explained the identified waterlogging points, desilting activities, and the functioning of MET teams.

  • MMC Zonal Commissioners
  • Officials from the Irrigation Department
  • Officials from the Electricity Department
  • Water Board officials
  • National Highways officials
  • UBD officials
  • Cantonment officials

Officials identified 188 waterlogging points, deployed 12 DRF teams, 74 Monsoon Emergency Teams, and 175 field personnel, while also discussing the installation of flood gates at nine lakes. HYDRAA emphasized inter-departmental coordination and proactive planning to ensure that residents face minimal disruption during the rainy season.
