Hyderabad Consumer Commission Orders IndiGo Airlines to Pay Passenger Rs 55,000

The commission directed IndiGo to pay Rs 35,000 towards the cost of the damaged bottle, along with 9 per cent annual interest on the amount. The airline was also ordered to pay Rs 15,000 as compensation for mental agony and an additional Rs 5,000 towards litigation expenses.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-III has directed IndiGo Airlines to pay a passenger a total compensation of Rs 55,000 for negligence in handling his checked-in baggage.

The case concerns a resident of Yousufguda, identified as Vineeth, who travelled on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Chennai on September 3, 2025.

According to the complaint, before the journey, the passenger had specifically informed the airline staff that his checked-in baggage contained a valuable and fragile “White and Blue” liquor bottle worth around Rs 35,000. He reportedly requested the staff to handle the baggage with care.

However, upon reaching Chennai and collecting his luggage, the passenger found that the bottle had broken inside the suitcase. The liquor had spilled throughout the bag, damaging several other belongings.

The passenger subsequently approached IndiGo with a complaint. However, the airline reportedly offered him only a voucher worth Rs 500, which he declined. After receiving no satisfactory response despite sending a legal notice, he approached the Hyderabad Consumer Commission.

During the proceedings, no representative from IndiGo Airlines appeared before the commission.

After examining the evidence, the Consumer Commission held that the airline had been negligent in ensuring the safe handling of the passenger’s baggage, amounting to a deficiency in service.

Accordingly, the commission ordered IndiGo Airlines to pay a total of Rs 55,000 to the passenger, in addition to the 9 per cent annual interest applicable to the Rs 35,000 compensation amount.
