HYDERABAD: India BITS Pilani’s Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP) marked a watershed moment in higher education today, conferring degrees upon a record 15,153 working professionals across 30 specialized disciplines.
Held at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus, WILP Convocation 2026 brought together a cohort that doubled in size since last year, while extending the celebrations through an immersive virtual experience.
The historic ceremony was presided over by the Chief Guest, Mr. Atul B. Lall, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Dixon Technologies, along with Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani, and Prof. S. Gurunarayanan, Director-in-Charge (Off-Campus Programmes and Industry Engagement), BITS Pilani, in the presence of students, parents & family members, faculty members and other stakeholders.
Driven by BITS Pilani WILP, this paradigm shift highlights an era where learning is embraced as a perpetual professional journey essential for sustained career growth.
Reflecting India’s core growth engines, technology and digital domains comprised 46% of the graduating class, while 35% represented critical engineering, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors. The cohort also stood out for its rich diversity and inclusive reach, bringing together over 2,000 women learners, 167 medical doctors, 60 defence personnel, and 80 international learners across 15 nations into a single, high-impact academic community.
Highlighting the macro-level significance of this milestone for the nation’s economic trajectory, Dr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chancellor of BITS Pilani, emphasised in his speech that India stands at a pivotal juncture in its economic journey, poised to lead the global knowledge and industrial order. To sustain this momentum, the traditional demarcation between education and employment must permanently dissolve.
Dr. Kumar Mangalam Birla further mentioned that when professionals continually enrich their academic capabilities alongside their active careers, they create a compound effect on national productivity. The record graduation of over 15,000 working professionals today is not merely an institutional milestone; it is proof of an agile, future-ready Indian workforce driving the nation’s economic resilience and technological sovereignty on the global stage.
This 100% year-on-year growth signals a fundamental shift in India’s employment landscape, where pursuing advanced academic degrees while remaining fully employed has become the new benchmark for career longevity.
Building on nearly five decades of academic leadership, BITS Pilani WILP is one of India’s most influential continuing education initiatives, currently engaging over 51,000 enrolled learners and a global alumni network exceeding 1.5 lakh+ professionals across 32 countries.
Emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning in an era driven by changing technology, Chief Guest Mr. Atul B. Lall, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Dixon Technologies, said, “In an era of rapidly evolving technology, professionals must inculcate continuous learning for a successful career.
High-tech manufacturing, electronics design, and advanced digital infrastructure require talent capable of mastering complex domain expertise. BITS Pilani’s Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP) serve as a vital bridge between academia and industry, enabling working professionals to deepen their knowledge without pausing their career momentum.”
Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Vice Chancellor of BITS Pilani, added, “By combining rigorous academics with state-of-the-art simulation tools tailored specifically for adult learners, we ensure our graduates immediately deploy their elevated capabilities in their workplaces. Seeing working professionals from tech, healthcare, defence, and manufacturing graduate together reflects how higher education directly powers the working economy.”
Elaborating on pedagogical design, Prof. S Gurunarayanan, Director-in-Charge (Off-Campus Programmes and Industry Engagement) of BITS Pilani, said, “Our pedagogical framework is built around the cognitive and operational realities of working professionals.
By integrating cloud-based virtual labs and industry-aligned curricula, we convert daily workplace challenges into active, high-impact learning environments. The graduation of this diverse cohort across 30 specialised disciplines demonstrates that learning is no longer confined to a particular stage of one’s career.
At BITS Pilani WILP, we are committed to being a flag bearer of this culture of continuous learning, enabling professionals to continually renew their knowledge, adapt to evolving industry needs and build capabilities throughout their careers.”
