Schools, Colleges Shut on Monday as BMC Declares Holiday Amid Orange Alert for Heavy Rain

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai on Monday following an Orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rainfall and gusty winds. The decision was announced on Sunday evening to ensure the safety of students. However, government and private offices will function as usual, while citizens have been advised to step out only if necessary.

BMC Orders Closure of Schools and Colleges

According to a release issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), all:

  • Government schools
  • Private schools
  • Civic-run schools
  • Government colleges
  • Private colleges
  • Civic-run colleges

will remain closed on Monday across Mumbai.

The civic administration said the decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of students.

IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai, forecasting:

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Gusty winds

The weather department’s forecast prompted the civic administration to announce the precautionary holiday.

Government and Private Offices to Function Normally

While educational institutions will remain closed, the BMC clarified that:

  • Government offices will function as usual.
  • Private offices will also remain open.

The civic body appealed to residents to leave their homes only if necessary due to the expected adverse weather conditions.

Heavy Rain Continues to Affect Mumbai

Mumbai and its surrounding areas have been experiencing very heavy rainfall over the past few days.

According to the release, the rain has resulted in:

  • Waterlogged streets
  • Treefall incidents

The recent spell of rain has claimed three lives, including that of a schoolboy, since June 30.
