Hyderabad: In a key development in lake restoration in Hyderabad, HYDRAA Commissioner Sri AV Ranganath visited Ibrahim Bagh Lake in Rajendranagar mandal and directed officials to ensure Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are completed along with lake restoration works, warning that delays could lead to fresh sewage contamination. The inspection is part of the second phase of 14 lake restoration projects, with works currently ongoing.

HYDRAA Commissioner Inspects Ibrahim Bagh Lake Restoration

HYDRAA Commissioner Sri AV Ranganath visited Ibrahim Bagh Lake in Rajendranagar mandal on Thursday as part of the second phase of restoration of 14 lakes.

During the visit, he:

  • Reviewed the ongoing restoration works
  • Inspected the progress of desilting and cleaning

He instructed officials to ensure that silt is completely removed, stating that only then:

  • Foul smell will be reduced
  • Groundwater levels will improve

STPs Must Be Ready Along with Lake Restoration

The Commissioner stressed that:

  • STPs (Sewage Treatment Plants) must be ready by the time lake restoration is completed
  • Otherwise, there is a risk of sewage water re-entering and polluting the lake again

He held discussions with Jal Mandali officials overseeing STP works and directed them to:

  • Ensure no obstacles in construction near the lake area
  • Speed up the work

Officials informed that:

  • STPs are being built with a capacity of 56 MLD

The Commissioner also instructed:

  • Treated water from STPs should first go into a sedimentation pond
  • Then be released into the main lake

No Compromise in Lake Restoration Works

The Commissioner made it clear that:

  • No compromise should be made in lake restoration

Key details of Ibrahim Bagh Lake:

  • Spread over nearly 100 acres
  • Encroachments within the FTL (Full Tank Level) limits have already been removed by HYDRAA

He directed that:

  • These cleared areas should be brought under lake development zone

Scientific Development and Flood Management Measures

The Commissioner instructed officials to:

  • Follow scientific methods in inlet and outlet construction
  • Ensure that:
    • Floodwater enters the lake during heavy rains
    • Sewage water is diverted away during normal times

He also suggested:

  • Development of a pathway around the lake
  • Facilities for people of all age groups to relax

Catchment and Water Flow Details

The Commissioner stated:

  • Water flows into the lake from a catchment area of 29.53 square kilometers
  • After the lake fills, excess water flows into the Musi River

Visit to Kudikunta Lake in Kondapur

Earlier, HYDRAA Commissioner also visited:

  • Kudikunta Lake in Kondapur, developed by:
    • SAHE (Society for Advancement of Human Endeavour)
    • The Rain Water Project

During the visit:

  • Kalpana Ramesh, founder of The Rain Water Project, requested protection of 275 square yards of land falling within the lake boundary

She suggested:

  • Protecting such areas will help in park development
  • Enable recreational spaces for all age groups

The Commissioner responded that:

  • The issue will be examined soon and action will be taken

He also appreciated Kalpana Ramesh’s initiative in:

  • Transforming the lake into a revenue-generating resource

The HYDRAA inspection of Ibrahim Bagh Lake in Rajendranagar mandal, led by Commissioner Sri AV Ranganath, emphasized that STPs must be completed alongside lake restoration, with strict directions on desilting, flood management, and scientific development, while restoration work under the second phase of 14 lakes continues and further action is under consideration.
